The Ateneo Mathematics Society welcomed freshmen, transferees, and shiftees into the community through its annual orientation program, Math 101. This year’s event was held last August 27, 2025, designed to introduce new students to the Math major life here in Ateneo. With insightful talks, fun activities, and opportunities to forge bonds among peers, Math 101: Origin was the best place to start.
The program started with the Junior Talk by Matt Pacis (3 BS AMDSc), who shared his experiences as a student navigating the academic rigor of Mathematics. He reminded the participants that while high school Mathematics may have seemed comfortable, Mathematics in the university demands greater discipline, and perseverance. Matt emphasized that they are not alone in this journey, as their fellow Math majors and the AMS community are always ready to provide support. He also stressed the importance of time management and organization, encouraging the students to believe in their belonging in the Math community.

This was followed by the Alumni Career Talk, where students were mobilized into breakout rooms per course. Graduates shared how their experiences as students opened doors to diverse career opportunities. Andrea Nicole Senson (BS AMDSc), who shared about her work experience at Kenvue, highlighted Mathematics as the language that drives A.I. and data systems, offering careers in analytics and data science. Stephanie Sese (BS AMF) of MSCI shared how her skills in Mathematics, combined with problem-solving and resilience, equipped her for client services and collaboration. Meanwhile, Kurt de los Santos (BS MA) and Jim Mijares (BS MA) spoke about their experiences in research and teaching, reflecting on how Mathematics equips graduates not only for work but also for contributing to broader societal needs. Together, the talks painted a picture of the many opportunities awaiting students beyond Ateneo, demonstrating the greater role of Mathematics in the world.

To foster a sense of community, participants joined the much-anticipated Amazing Race, where they were grouped into Math and Space-inspired “crews” with creative names such as Linear Alge-Libra, Virgonometry, Leogarithm, (Pi)sces, Cancer-Schroeder-Bernstein Theorem, Capricosine, Aries under the Curve, and Sagittaradius. Teams competed across four lively games: Maze, Hulaan mo at Isasayaw ko, What the Flip!, and Add It Up to earn points through problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. The race provided a fun way for new students to get to know each other while building friendships that will support them in their years ahead.

The day concluded with a Senior Focus Group Discussion (FGD), where upperclassmen offered practical advice and encouragement. Seniors shared honest reflections on balancing academics, organizational involvement, and personal life, while answering questions from the freshmen about what to expect in the coming years. The FGD provided a space for mentorship, assuring new students that the challenges of being a Math major are never faced alone, but rather within a community that learns and grows together.

Math 101: Origin not only introduced the newest members of the Mathematics Department to their respective journeys, but also affirmed the strength of the community that motivates them. It was a reminder that being a Math major is not simply about solving problems, it is about belonging, growing, and moving forward together.
